EMS SATCOM Fleet 55 provides 64 Kbps ISDN connectivity at sea. The terminal, a power supply and a high performance maritime stabilized antenna, enables you to send and receive email, access your VPN, transfer data and pictures and run live video conferencing, all at 64 Kbps, or send faxes at 14.4 kbps - whatever facilities you need to stay in touch while on the move.

Fleet 55 really enables shipboard IT as never before.

EMS SATCOM Fleet 55 also supports Inmarsat's popular Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) - an "always connected" service suitable for web browsing and email. This is very cost effective for low data transfers as it is billed by the Mbit and not by connect time.

The development of the EMS Fleet 55 terminal has been one of continuous and natural evolution from previous generations of EMS Land Mobile Inmarsat products – namely the STORM portable GAN terminal and the vehicular-mounted CYCLONE.

Launched in 2001, the STORM provided the basis for the overall design and engineering of the ensuing terminals and enabled 64 kbps ISDN communication from anywhere on the Earth’s landmass. The STORM found favour within mobile new reporting teams and the oil exploration market.

The CYCLONE, launched in 2002, extended the capabilities of the STORM portable GAN terminal still further by the use of a simple-to-fit conversion kit, consisting of a mounting cradle for the terminal, a power supply and a high performance vehicular steerable antenna.

The development of the Fleet 55 involved the incorporation of a marine power supply and a high-grade steerable marine antenna. Inmarsat Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) was introduced into all the above products in March 2003.

It can thus be seen that the EMS Fleet 55 has an existing track record within markets that demand high quality and reliability.

The EMS Fleet 55 terminal supports a comprehensive selection of interfaces, including, ISDN, X.21, RS449, RS232, and two RJ11 ports, as well as an option for enabling of STUIIB/III secure communications.

Two distinct data services are available with the Fleet 55, Mobile 64 Kbits/s ISDN, and Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS). Both services utilize the spot beams on Inmarsat's satellites, providing coverage that includes the majority of ocean areas where most shipping takes place. The global Inmarsat beams provide coverage for the basic Fleet 55 voice service.

One of the unique features of the EMS Fleet 55 terminal is its Virtual Front Panel. By facilitating full control from an attached computer, the front panel allows the terminal to be operated from a location other than where it is physically situated.

The equipment costs less to acquire and install than any other high-speed data terminal. Usage costs are also lower. Compared to previous generations of Inmarsat services (such as Inmarsat A, B or M) savings are considerable. EMS has already documented reports of Inmarsat Fleet users enjoying 67% savings on data communication costs and 30% overall savings when compared to Inmarsat-A.

Cost savings are attributable not only to the low airtime tariff but also to the added flexibility that packet data provides. Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) is charged by the bit and is hence suited to interactive or "bursty" traffic such as e-mail, instant messaging and automatic data acquisition from ship sensors.

Other benefits are derived from the small size and weight of the radome. Measuring only 68 cm in height and weighing in at 18 Kg, the radome can easily be handled and installed by one person, eliminating the cost of expensive cranage normally required to complete an installation.

Fleet 55's compact size makes it ideally suited to vessels where space restrictions are an issue, or for ship managers who may wish to quickly commission or decommission satcom equipment on vessels as they come in and out of management.

EMS intends to address both the new-build and retrofit markets. For owners of smaller vessels there has, to date, been no affordable or viable data communications option at all; for larger vessels, it is a case of upgrading aging systems that often are too costly to maintain or that provide inferior service.

Typical customers will include fishing vessels, ocean-going merchant vessels, larger yachts and ferries - in fact anyone who requires a compact terminal with a highly versatile data capability.

The map shows the current coverage under the Inmarsat 3 satellites. The F-55 voice services are available throughout the global beam footprints.

F-55 data services are available within the dark blue spot beam areas. However, once Inmarsat's new I-4 constellation is operational (mid 2005), the extra spot beams provided by these satellites are anticipated to fill in almost all the gaps within the IOR and AOR-W regions.
